I tried Server 2008 and I'm not very impressed. I think to try Vista or 7...

Level 2 Why don't you try linux instead?

Level 3 Linux might be a good choice for configuring and installing a web server at home. However, some advanced skills will be needed in order to complete such a serious task if you are not familiar with linux and consoles.

On the windows side, I've never tried this myself, but a short googling says that you might not even need Server OS for that - just installing and configuring Apache Web Server on your Windows OS plus some advanced firewalling and passwording.

Level 2 For what you will use the server...static pages on home network or you want to make worldwide pages? You may not use Win Server but normal OS it depends on what you will do :)

Level 9 In order to get adequate answer, you have to provide more details about the problem you`re having. What are you going to use the server for? Why are you not impressed by Server 2008? On what machine(I mean hardware specs) are you installing?
